The mission of this advocate-led project is to renovate the skatepark into a durable, ALL-CONCRETE, low-maintenance space that prioritizes safety, accessibility, and long-term community benefit. By preserving the spirit and overall layout of the original park while introducing improved flow and new features, the project aims to create a welcoming, inclusive environment for users of all ages, abilities, and mobility levels—strengthening our community through accessible recreation.
*Please note: pictured to the right is an early concept drawing, not a final plan. If funding is secured, public design meetings will be held to gather community input and ensure final plans meet community member needs.

Balboa Skatepark is one of the most transit-accessible skateparks in the city, yet remains underused due to its deteriorating condition. Easily reached via major public transportation lines, including BART and MUNI, the park was originally built as a wooden structure over a concrete slab. Over time, exposure to the elements and general wear and tear have taken its toll. Through ongoing coordination with SF Recreation & Parks, it has become clear that there is shared concern about the park’s current condition and a desire for a long-term solution. Renovating Balboa Skatepark would resolve the current maintenance challenges while revitalizing the space for the local community and regional users alike.

Our overarching goal of the Balboa skatepark renovation is to secure the necessary funding and oversee the complete renovation of Balboa Skatepark, collaborating with local partners such as Friends of Balboa Park, SF Recreation and Parks, and the broader community—including you!
To achieve this, we are first focusing on securing funding which would be used to support the skatepark design, construction, and a grand opening. As of January 2026, project leads are preparing a submission for San Francisco’s Community Opportunity Fund (COF), which could provide up to $1.5 million in project funding if granted.
Check out the FAQ section below for more details on what full project funding would cover and the steps to get there.

Best practices for planning and developing public skateparks, supporting individuals and communities working to create public skate spaces.

The existing skatepark is an aging, wood ramp facility that is reaching the end of its service life. Ongoing deterioration has created safety concerns, increased maintenance (more maintenance = more costly), and reduced the skateparks overall use—our definition of heartbreak.
Renovating the park addresses all of the above. Rebuilding with durable, long-lasting materials like concrete will significantly improve safety, durability, and overall functionality, encouraging broader and more consistent use. If the project gets built, we plan to work closely with the City to establish clear maintenance plans, supported by education and shared resources.
Bonus: Balboa Skatepark is one of only three city-managed skateparks with a bowl, presenting an exciting opportunity. With the right upgrades, its bowl can become the ideal “happy medium,” supporting skaters from beginners to veterans and serving as a natural progression point toward the more challenging bowls at Hilltop and Potrero.
The project proposes replacing the existing facility with a new, permanent concrete skatepark designed to serve a wide range of users and skill levels while creating a durable, welcoming public space. The design will also consider existing park amenities to ensure the skatepark works in synergy with the surrounding spaces, like the ball fields & pedestrian pathway. Best yet, there could be a chance to expand the footprint up to 4,000 square feet!
The renovated skatepark will support skateboarders and other wheeled sports users of all ages and abilities—from beginners to advanced riders—while comfortably accommodating spectators, caregivers, and park-goers. We’re also hopeful that the renovation could bring more people into the Balboa neighborhood—picture an early morning session followed by breakfast at Ana’s or Higher Grounds Coffee Shop.
Dream bigger: with a proper renovation this skatepark can continue to host skate camps, events, and clinics—while reclaiming its role as a true go-to for daily sessions, a place to learn and progress, and a gathering space that strengthens the broader skate community. Ideally, you’ll help shape what this next chapter becomes.
Further action for the project is currently pending funding. It's estimated that the Skatepark renovation will require an estimated $1.5 - 2 million dollars to complete. To knock this out, we are throwing our hat in the ring for the SF Community Opportunity Fund (COF).
If the upcoming not awarded, then it is back to the drawing board. However, if the Community Opportunity Fund (COF) award is secured, the renovation is expected to move forward in three main steps—think of it as a row of dominoes. Once the funding domino falls, it triggers:
